🌸 Dahlia tuber update 🌸

All dahlia tuber orders are packed and ready to go!

Shipping will begin Monday (as long as the forecast holds), starting with SW Ontario and will continue based on the temperatures & weather of their destinations and routes along the way. Keep an eye on your email (and junk mail) for shipping confirmation & your Canada Post tracking numbers…I’ll also update on my stories as I ship.

Local pickup is happening this Saturday & Sunday from 12-6pm. No appointment needed, just come by anytime to secure your goodies!

If you’re unable to make it this weekend, please reach out to arrange an alternate pickup date.

Workshops are officially live on the website!

Tickets go live this Saturday at noon, so consider this your sign to text your girls, make the plans and be ready to grab your spots before they’re gone.

We’ve also added something new this season… you’ll be able to paint your own vase using alcohol inks and fill it with beautiful flowers, had picked by you! It’s creative, a little bit messy and such a fun way to make something completely your own. The photo is not AI, it’s an actual example of the vase you can create with @ambachthaus and it’s absolutely stunning. 🤩

Iryna and her team put together such a lovely event for their clients and I was honoured to guide everyone through creating their own floral arrangements.

There’s something about a room full of people slowing down, getting creative and connecting over flowers. One of my favourite things is giving everyone the exact same recipe and watching as each person creates a completely different design.

And the cherry on top is that Easter is this weekend and everyone has a beautiful, spring inspired centrepiece for their dinner parties!

This has been yearssss in the daydreaming 💭

Since the beginning, I’ve dreamed of having a space that was something closer to a little storefront, a place I could truly grow into. And while the flower stand has been so good to me (truly, it’s been part of this story in the best way) it’s also quietly held me back from sharing more of what I’ve been dreaming up, collabs, more beautiful things and gift items I could offer.

So…I changed that this season. 🌸

This little shed will be transformed into our farm store…a cozy, ever-evolving space that will slowly become a curated gift shop filled with blooms and all the beautiful things I’ve been wanting to bring to you all.

Do I have all the details figured out? Not even close. Hours, flow, logistics…still TBD. But if you know me, you know I’m a jump in with two feet kind of girl and I’ll figure it out along the way.

A sneak peek of what it looks like to plant & grow tulips as cut flowers vs when you grow them in your landscape garden beds.

The tulips have pushed through the surface and will be blooming in a few weeks! We planted thousands of bulbs in the fall and are so looking forward to welcoming in spring with the first blooms of the season!

Our season has arrived…🌸🫶🏻💕

Lace flower 🫶🏻

Soft, feminine and whimsical. She quietly steals the show & I always wish I planted so many more successions of her every year because I’m always sad when she’s done.
She’s the little reminder that not everything needs to be bold to be beautiful, sometimes the impact is in the delicate touches.

Hand drawn maps & stopping to ask for directions, riding your bikes all over town with no plan, knowing to come home when the streetlights came on, no cell phones or any way to get a hold of someone…if you called or showed up at a friend’s house and they weren’t home, you’d just have to go search for them, wild imaginations, the smell of the garden hose, the sound of the ice cream truck, putting someone “on hold” when they called, walking to the corner store to buy penny candy.

We were so much more disconnected back then…and yet, much more….connected.
I’ve been sensing a quiet pull from people, a longing to step away from the constant noise, the schedules, the traffic, the pressure to always be moving faster. To trade the rush of the city and the endless to-do lists for open space, fresh air and days that follow the rhythm of the seasons instead of the clock.

I created this space here at the farm for just this reason. A way to step back into the 90’s in a sense, even just for a couple hours on a Saturday afternoon with your girlfriends.

Our little hidden slice of paradise in the small town of Burford, tucked away inside the pines from the hustle and chaos…we hope to see you here this season. 🫶🏻

We start the majority of our flowers that we grow here indoors. We try to mimic the natural elements with things like fans and lights but in order to avoid the shock of going from the comfort of the indoors to the harsh reality of living outdoors, our seedlings must be hardened off properly first. It’s a process that can take up to 1-2 weeks and will ensure our seedlings can withstand the elements like wind, fluctuating temps and hot direct sun once they are planted.

Our hardening off schedule begins with a few hours of full shade, gradually increasing the time outside as well as introducing dappled sunlight into full sun until eventually the seedlings are able to withstand full days of full sunlight and overnight exposure.

Whether you’re growing veggies or flowers…if you start your seedlings inside, be sure you don’t skip this step!

Here’s to the women who plant dreams, nurture growth and bloom in every season.

Every fall we tuck thousands of tulip bulbs into the ground knowing we won’t see the reward for another six months.

All winter they sleep while we wait.

We’re now only 6–7 weeks away from the very first blooms of spring, where the quiet months of winter will burst into a field bursting full of colour.

The countdown to tulip season has officially begun, and we can hardly wait to see the first buds poke through the ground!

The anticipation is reallll!!! 🌷

5 years ago I shared a simple little “coming soon” post.

No farm.
No field.
No u-picks.
No workshops.

Just an idea.
A flower truck…and a whole lot of hope.

Spill The Dirt started in Hespeler as a dream that felt a little wild and a whole lot of scary. I didn’t know then that the flower truck would lead to the flower farm here in Burford. That pop-ups would turn into workshops. That bouquets would turn into weddings. That a small idea would root itself and grow like it has.

There were seasons of doubt. Long nights. Big risks. Learning curves. Some crazy obstacles (if you have been here since the beginning yk).

But there have also been new friendships and real connections. New doors opened. Confidence built. Unforgettable moments made. And a community that’s showed up again and again.

Thank you for supporting Spill The Dirt from that very first “coming soon” & everything in between.

Five years in…and I feel like we’re just getting started. Here’s to our sixth season and many more to come! Thank you so much to each and every one of you for being a part of this journey wherever you hopped on. You make it all possible. 🫶🏻

MTV Cribs: Flower Farmer Edition

Welcome to my grow room! 🌱

“Where the magic happens” so to speak. Where the season begins long before the season actually begins. Join me in my grow room and take a sneak peek at what we’ve been up to the last couple months as we prepare for the upcoming season and start all the seeds for the beautiful florals that will soon make up the bouquets that will fill the flower stand, flower truck, your weddings & workshops.

🌸 Let’s start ranunculus 🌸

Step 1: soak your dried corms for 3-5 hours. They’ll plump up during this process and can double in size.

Step 2: moisten a container of soil and put an inch of soil in the bottom of a 1020 tray. Line your tray with the corms (tentacles pointing down) and cover them with soil.

Step 3: place the tray in a dark place. I use my unfinished basement that’s heated and find they sprout really well.

Step 4: check on the trays daily and don’t allow them to dry out. I use my mister and mist as needed. Soil that is too wet will rot the corms so try to keep a happy balance.

Step 5: once your corms begin to root and you see shoots begin to push up through the soil, you can move the trays from the dark, under lights.

Step 6: after you’ve grown your corms into little plants and it’s safe to plant your ranunculus outside, harden your plants off and plant out into your beds. You can also plant right out once sprouted if the weather permits. Ranunculus can handle down to -2c unprotected.

Ranunculus love cool temps and go dormant as soon as temperatures spike. They can be really tricky figuring out when to start them so that you have them early enough to get a decent season out of them before the spring temps go through the roof but not too early that you kill them (the corms will rot if they freeze).

Many people experiment with ranunculus and push the rules with what they can handle. Using high tunnels, overwintering in zones they aren’t hardy in, low tunnels and frost cloth…you can manipulate when you can plant these guys out.

If you aren’t looking to push the boundaries at all, 8 weeks before your last frost is a good time to start your corms for May/June blooms.

Polka 💛

A unique anemone style dahlia! Polka has creamy white petals, with streaks of pink & raspberry...each bloom varying in shades and degrees of colour. Its centre is a fluffy pop of golden yellow.

Typically not one to be drawn to yellows & reds, I’m a big fan of Polka for its sunny centres, ability to be used in neutral palettes and looks absolutely beautiful in fall arrangements. A must have in your collection!

She’ll be available in our dahlia tuber presale this coming Sunday February 1st at 12pm est.
