5 years ago I shared a simple little “coming soon” post.

No farm.
No field.
No u-picks.
No workshops.

Just an idea.
A flower truck…and a whole lot of hope.

Spill The Dirt started in Hespeler as a dream that felt a little wild and a whole lot of scary. I didn’t know then that the flower truck would lead to the flower farm here in Burford. That pop-ups would turn into workshops. That bouquets would turn into weddings. That a small idea would root itself and grow like it has.

There were seasons of doubt. Long nights. Big risks. Learning curves. Some crazy obstacles (if you have been here since the beginning yk).

But there have also been new friendships and real connections. New doors opened. Confidence built. Unforgettable moments made. And a community that’s showed up again and again.

Thank you for supporting Spill The Dirt from that very first “coming soon” & everything in between.

Five years in…and I feel like we’re just getting started. Here’s to our sixth season and many more to come! Thank you so much to each and every one of you for being a part of this journey wherever you hopped on. You make it all possible. 🫶🏻

🌸 Let’s start ranunculus 🌸

Step 1: soak your dried corms for 3-5 hours. They’ll plump up during this process and can double in size.

Step 2: moisten a container of soil and put an inch of soil in the bottom of a 1020 tray. Line your tray with the corms (tentacles pointing down) and cover them with soil.

Step 3: place the tray in a dark place. I use my unfinished basement that’s heated and find they sprout really well.

Step 4: check on the trays daily and don’t allow them to dry out. I use my mister and mist as needed. Soil that is too wet will rot the corms so try to keep a happy balance.

Step 5: once your corms begin to root and you see shoots begin to push up through the soil, you can move the trays from the dark, under lights.

Step 6: after you’ve grown your corms into little plants and it’s safe to plant your ranunculus outside, harden your plants off and plant out into your beds. You can also plant right out once sprouted if the weather permits. Ranunculus can handle down to -2c unprotected.

Ranunculus love cool temps and go dormant as soon as temperatures spike. They can be really tricky figuring out when to start them so that you have them early enough to get a decent season out of them before the spring temps go through the roof but not too early that you kill them (the corms will rot if they freeze).

Many people experiment with ranunculus and push the rules with what they can handle. Using high tunnels, overwintering in zones they aren’t hardy in, low tunnels and frost cloth…you can manipulate when you can plant these guys out.

If you aren’t looking to push the boundaries at all, 8 weeks before your last frost is a good time to start your corms for May/June blooms.

Polka 💛

A unique anemone style dahlia! Polka has creamy white petals, with streaks of pink & raspberry...each bloom varying in shades and degrees of colour. Its centre is a fluffy pop of golden yellow.

Typically not one to be drawn to yellows & reds, I’m a big fan of Polka for its sunny centres, ability to be used in neutral palettes and looks absolutely beautiful in fall arrangements. A must have in your collection!

She’ll be available in our dahlia tuber presale this coming Sunday February 1st at 12pm est.

Your seedlings DO however require strong, consistent light for about 16 hours per day. A sunny window is almost never enough. Light through glass is much weaker, and it comes from one direction, so plants stretch.
Shop lights work the same way the fancy grow lights do - for a fraction of the cost & the ones I use are linkable!

Stephanie from @marandcel.candleco will guide you step-by-step through the candle pouring process. You’ll learn about fragrance blending, proper pouring techniques and candle care as you create your very own custom candle to take home.

I’ve grown Miss Sarah for a couple of years now and tbh she’s never really been on my radar….until this year. I’ve only ever had a few plants and I think she just sort of fell under the radar, but after taking notice of just how stunning she is, I’m excited to see more of her next season!

When one season ends, another quietly begins.
While 2025 is officially done…the planning, seed starting and behind the scenes work never stops. Things definitely slow down during the winter but
in a few weeks I’ll already be starting the seeds for the 2026 season. It’s one of my favourite things, watching the grow room fill up with signs of life and seeing each flower grow from seed to bloom.

I’ll be taking you along for the seed starting journey this winter because when you get to watch the whole process, the blooms will be that much more special next season. 🌸

Seed starting season is just around the corner and here are some of my favourite Amazon finds that would not only make great stocking stuffers, but make the lives of the flower growers you know and love so much easier!
Or maybe you might want to add a few of these to your own wish list!

🌸 Electric mister - stop breaking bottles & your wrist. These misters are a GAME CHANGER!!!!

🌸 Geeni Bluetooth smart plug. Plug your grow lights into these smart plugs and use the app to set your lights on a timer. Never worry about remembering to turn your lights on & off again!

🌸 Foliage stripper/rose stripper/leaf stripper…whatever you want to call them. They’ll make life so much easier stripping some of the flowers you process. Especially ones with thorns like roses that can destroy your hands.

🌸 Sakogen snips ✂️ Hands down my favourite snips…I use these in the field, designing, for everything. And they’re ceramic coated so you can soak them in bleach without them rusting!

🌸 The Cut Flower Handbook by Lisa Mason Ziegler. This is Bible. Anything and everything you need to know about starting and growing cold hardy and tender annual cut flowers is in this book. A must have reference.

🌸 Seed packets. With the cost of seeds these days, many of us are starting (or already have been) saving seeds. These empty packets are great for saving seeds and recording all the essential information you need to keep.

🌸 Govee wifi hygrometer. Any hygrometer will work but if you have a cooler for your fresh cut flowers or are storing your dahlia tubers somewhere that could potentially freeze, you want to be able to monitor the temperature of the space at any time. The Govee hygrometer not only uses an app you can monitor anywhere from your phone, but you can also set a temperature range that sets off an alarm if the temperature range is breeched. Clutch in case a breaker blows!

🌸 Artline garden marker. Sharpie will fade in the sun and rain. These garden markers will hold up to the elements on your flagging tape for dahlia labelling and other garden labels.

I spent the evening last night scrolling through their gallery and obsessing over the florals from this special day. While I was hoping for and expected a more colourful Pantone colour choice (my guess was a green), white will always be a timeless and classic option for wedding florals and I’m a fan!

The scent of fresh winter greens, eucalyptus and toasted oranges are filling the air. There’s nothing quite like having a fresh winter wreath on your front door for the holidays.

Our handcrafted wreaths are now available to order (free delivery until this Sunday!) and we still have a few spots left for our last wreath workshop of the season, Sunday November 30th at Mann’s Distillery in Brantford.
