It’s a favourite among designers for weddings and event work.

Dahlia spotlight: WINE EYED JILL 🍷

All of the dahlias in every one of these photos is Wine Eyed Jill. If you’re looking to add tubers to your collection for weddings or events, WEJ is not your girl. She is forever changing with the weather and temperature, putting out vibrant ombré pinks and purples in early summer and softer shades of orange yellow and pale pinks later in the fall. She’s a beautiful chameleon that will keep you on your toes and we love her for it.

WEJ is an early bloomer, pumping out blooms all season long. She’s one of the tallest dahlias in our patch, growing 5-6’ in height, with tall, sturdy stems. She is a prolific tuber producer and her tubers store great over winter every season.

We love Wine Eyed Jill & we think you will too! 🌸

🌸 Cinnamon: cinnamon is an anti fungal and can help with algae, gnats and dampening off. Sprinkle a generous amount in your seed starting mix before filling your trays.

🌸 Electric mister: give those writs a break and let the automatic mister do the job for you. Most are USB charged and last forever. You’ll never go back!

🌸 @mygeeni smart wifi plug: these handy gadgets plug into your electrical outlet and your lights into the plug. They allow you to set your grow lights on a timer through a Bluetooth app so you don’t have to worry about turning your lights on/off. Set them and forget them.

🌸 Toothpick/bamboo skewers: anything pointy to allow you to pick up teeny tiny seeds and reduce waste or overseeding. Quality seeds and rare varieties cost 💲 and it’s easy to dump way too many seeds into each cell if we aren’t using the proper tools.

2024 was an incredible year. It was an uncomfortable year that pushed me well beyond my comfort zones and made me grow.

In May I quit my full time job and went full time with Spill The Dirt. Not having that second income and having to solely depend on my business to provide for my family was exciting and terrifying. Cue the economic downturn.
There have been lots of pivots this year and “I’ll figure it out when I get there” moments.
Sometimes when you’re in the thick of things it can seem so overwhelming but we made it to the end of the year and as I reflect back on this past season and the seasons before this, I’m so incredibly proud of how far I’ve come…and I wouldn’t be here without all of you beautiful people and your incredible support.
From the bottom of my heart, THANK YOU for your continued support. During a year that has sometimes made us choose between groceries and luxuries, thank you for choosing us when you have had a little extra cash to spoil yourselves or someone special. And if you had to sit this season out, we’ve missed you and understand, we’ll see you soon and appreciate the love and support you all have shared this season.

1. It’s seriously underrated. Phlox isn’t a variety you see often and it’s absolutely gorgeous!

2. They’re the perfect cottage garden bloom for your whimsical bouquet.

3. They have a long vase life.

4. It’s versatile. The neutral colours make them easy to pair with almost any bouquet palette. Add them to your u-pick bouquet or request them in your bridal.

5. Their scent. Sounds crazy but a lot of flower varieties are scent-less. Phlox has a soft, sweet scent sure to have you burying your face in your bouquet.

We grew phlox for the first time last season and fell absolute head over heels. We are adding it to the list again this year. Be sure to find it in our field this coming season at a u-pick or workshop or keep an eye out for it on the stand! 💐

I swapped waitressing nightmares where you can’t get out of the weeds and forget table 103’s ranch for flower farming nightmares…the past two weeks I’ve been making wreaths all night in my dreams and all season long I have nightmares of messing up dates and forgetting to pack important tools and buckets of flowers. 😅
